ALZHEIMER'S & COGNITIVE DECLINE THE CARROLL INSTITUTE APPROACH

Brain function not what it was?

Are you losing your memory? Can’t focus or concentrate? Shrouded in brain fog? Do you fatigue easily? Have you lost your motivation or zest for life?

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, your brain may be aging too fast or degenerating. The good news?

Cognitive decline isn’t an inevitable part of aging. Identifying the factors driving it can open the door to targeted intervention.

WHAT CAN DRIVE COGNITIVE DECLINE?

It's Not Just About the Diagnosis — It's About What's Driving It

Many forms of cognitive decline involve overlapping biological mechanisms, including neuroinflammation, impaired cellular energy production, vascular dysfunction, metabolic problems, toxic exposures, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, infections, sleep disorders, and other potentially modifiable factors.

That’s why we look beyond the diagnostic label and investigate what may be contributing to cognitive decline in each individual patient.

THE PROGRESSION NOBODY TALKS ABOUT

Understanding the Timeline of Cognitive Decline

SCI (Subjective Cognitive Impairment)

You begin to realize you’re forgetting things but you’re able to “hide” it from those around you. It could be a name. Or you reach for a word and can’t find it. It could be you walk into a room and for a moment you forget why you’re there.

Significant or progressive memory loss should not simply be dismissed as normal aging. These changes can be early signs that deserve further evaluation.

MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment)

SCI progresses into MCI. MCI is when those who know you best can tell you’re starting to forget things and have difficulties. By the time you reach MCI, the condition has often been developing for up to twenty years. It is slow moving but relentless. At this stage, the saying goes “Time Is Tissue” and there’s no time to lose. The longer you wait, the worse it becomes.

For some individuals, MCI  progresses to dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, particularly when the underlying drivers are not identified and addressed.

Alzheimer's Diagnosis

MCI progresses to meet traditional diagnostic criteria. By this time, the disease has been progressing for years – but it’s still not too late for functional medicine intervention.

“Research shows that biological changes associated with neurodegenerative disease can begin many years before a diagnosis. The earlier we identify cognitive changes and potential contributors, the more opportunity we have to intervene.”

A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO COGNITIVE DECLINE

Traditional neurology plays an important role in diagnosing neurological disease and providing medical management. At The Carroll Institute, we take an additional approach by integrating Functional Medicine, Functional Neurology, precision testing, and targeted neurological rehabilitation to investigate potential contributors to cognitive decline and areas of brain function that may benefit from rehabilitation.

WHY IDENTIFYING CONTRIBUTING FACTORS MATTERS

Going Beyond Symptom Management

Traditional medicine focuses on managing symptoms with pharmaceuticals that don’t address the underlying inflammation and energy dysfunction destroying your brain cells.

Functional medicine identifies and systematically addresses the root causes.

Our approach begins by identifying the factors that are contributing to YOUR cognitive decline and addressing them systematically and individually.

THE FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE & FUNCTIONAL NEUROLOGY DIFFERENCE

Treating Causes, Not Just Symptoms

Functional Medicine and Functional Neurology allow us to look beyond the diagnostic label and evaluate each patient’s individual pattern of cognitive dysfunction and potential contributing factors.

HOW FUNCTIONAL NEUROLOGY FITS INTO OUR APPROACH

At The Carroll Institute, we apply Functional Neurology to evaluate patterns of brain function and identify areas that may benefit from targeted neurological rehabilitation. This is integrated with Functional Medicine and precision testing to develop an individualized approach for each patient.

Carroll Institute's recode program reverse Alzheimer's disease program

The difference is profound: By integrating Functional Neurology with Functional Medicine and precision testing, we can evaluate both potential biological contributors to cognitive decline and patterns of neurological function that may benefit from targeted rehabilitation.

THERE IS HOPE

Your Brain Can Heal When Given the Right Support

Modern diets, stressful lifestyles, and environmental toxins all take their toll on the brain. The brain retains a remarkable capacity for adaptation and neuroplasticity, which is why identifying modifiable contributors and supporting healthy brain function can matter.

The brain has remarkable healing capacity when:

  • Inflammation is reduced through targeted interventions
  • Energy production is restored at the cellular level
  • Toxic burdens are safely removed
  • Nutritional deficiencies are corrected
  • Hormonal balance is optimized

A Diagnosis Doesn’t Mean There Is Nothing You Can Do

Don’t dismiss cognitive changes as “just aging.” Identifying modifiable contributors can provide important opportunities to support brain health and restore cognitive function.
